Ukash sees record sales in the lead up to Get online week
London 20 October 2010: Ukash, the global e-money network, saw
record sales over the weekend, as consumers jumped online in the
lead up to Get online
week. More than 80,000 people across the UK will be
logging on for the first time over the coming week, as Get online
week spreads awareness of how to use the internet safely.
With more people using the internet for the first time, it is
more important then ever to spread awareness of how to use the
internet securely and protect consumers against identity fraud.
Ukash is a secure payment method, enabling consumers to shop, pay
and play online safely using cash. Ukash was developed to protect
personal identity and financial information when making online
transactions; eliminating the threat of credit and debit card fraud
for consumers and repudiations and charge-backs for retailers.
Recent figures released by the National Fraud Authority have
shown that fraudsters obtain more than £1,000 from every identity
they steal. This means that identity fraud has cost £1.9bn
over the past year, affecting over 1.8 million people in the
UK.
As an online payment method, Ukash offers a solution to the
problem of identity fraud. Cash is exchanged for a prepaid voucher
containing a unique 19-digit number used to pay online. No bank or
card details are ever exposed and therefore the lingering fear of
credit card fraud is eliminated.
Paul Coxhill, Marketing Director for Ukash warns: "During
Get online week, it is vital for those who are new to the
internet to realise the importance of protecting their personal
identity online. As recent figures have shown online fraud is a
real and continuing threat and consumers can lose thousands of
pounds as a result of identity theft. As a secure payment solution,
Ukash has many customers who have come to us after experiencing
fraud as they can spend online safely, without using cards."
Get online week 2010, which takes place from the 18 -
24 October, is an annual event to inspire and help people to get
online. Over 3,000 events are held at UK online centres across the
UK, aiming to help 80,000 people get online with the help of
myguide,
a free online service for people new to computers and the
internet.
