Deputy Assistant Commissioner Janet Williams of Scotland
Yard has warned the public that international criminal networks are
preparing to target the London 2012 Olympics. According to
Williams, there is a lot of work to be done with internet
fraud threatening the Olympics as criminals prepare
sophisticated electronic attacks on transport infrastructures,
sponsorship deals and ticketing. The Metropolitan police have
established a specialist team to examine the threat of electronic
and internet attacks on the 2012 Olympic Games and they hope to
acquire extra funding from the Home Office to dedicate
to online security to help deal with threats similar to those
made at the Beijing games last year.
The police have said they are starting to see evidence of
e-crime threatening the London Olympics. Companies are being set up
under what are believed to be false names in anticipation of fraud
and other types of criminal activity, and in recent months
hospitals, police forces and major private companies in the UK have
been victims of cyber crime.
Williams warned yesterday that the criminals 'are determined,
sophisticated and flourishing' after announcing at the Association
of Chief Police Officers' annual conference that three million
online crimes take place in Britain ever year; about one every 10
seconds.
