Safe online payment options needed for rising number of child internet users

A report has found that the number of Internet users aged 2-11 has now reached 16 million, 9.5% of the active online universe.

Time spent online among children has soared by 63 percent over the past five years, as children are increasingly drawn to watching videos, playing games and - even more so than adults - visiting virtual worlds.

It is vital that as children use the internet more in their day-to-day lives, they are given the opportunity to enjoy shopping safely online.

There are now payment methods that allow users to swap cash for vouchers which they can use online to shop, pay and play.

Mark Chirnside, CEO of online payment method Ukash, explained, "Young people make up a large proportion of the 'unbanked' population and this research demonstrates just how active they are online. With new methods in place for kids to shop, pay and play safely online, retailers should be providing these options. This will mean that parents have the option of giving their kids an allowance of e-cash, instead of them using their credit cards."
