Sophisticated scams fuel card fraud surge

Analyst CPP's annual Card Fraud Index, published today, has revealed that more than a quarter of adults in the UK have fallen victim to card fraud - a rise of over six per cent, which reflects the explosion of new and ever more sophisticated scams.

The worst affected area, Cardiff, has seen incidences of card fraud rise by 17 per cent in the last two years - meaning over a third of cardholders have been affected. Other hot-spots highlighted were London, Norwich, Southampton and Leeds.

Online fraud remains the biggest threat, affecting a third of all victims, but the research suggested that while almost a fifth of cardholders admitted to being more concerned about card fraud than they were last year, many still fail to take adequate precautions to protect themselves from falling prey to fraudsters.

One way to protect yourself from cybercrime and avoid identity theft online is to use cash online through Ukash. As Ukash does not require users to provide their bank details, consumers are able to shop, pay or play online safely, securely and anonymously.
